The Estonian Border Guard Aviation Group is one of ten authorities within the Estonian Border Guard. The Estonian border includes 764 km of territorial sea border and the tasks of the border guard include dealing with marine pollution, search and rescue and illegal immigration.
Heike Schneider, SSC’s project manager, wel-comes this opportunity to provide Estonia with a powerful tool in its sea surveillance activities. “It is also nice to know that you are doing some-thing good for the Baltic environment” she says.
MSS 6000, the latest generation of SSC’s mari-time surveillance system, comprises a field-proven suite of sensors integrated with dedicated mission management software. Sensor informa-tion, mission reports, target database, digital maps and other key information are integrated in the user interface. This gives the right support to the operator in every situation. It also has the capability to send data in real time to headquar-ters and other units and thus becomes an inte-grated part in the surveillance network.
The MSS 6000 and its predecessor MSS 5000 has been installed in a variety of airplanes in countries all around the world, for example, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Greece, USA and Canada.

The MSS 6000 for the Estonian Border Guard Aviation Group is a fully integrated system including SLAR (Side-Looking Airborne Radar), IR/UV (Infrared/ Ultraviolet) scan-ner, FLIR,(Forward Looking Infrared), Search, surveillance and weather avoidance radar, still and video cameras, AIS (Automatic Identification System), high-speed satellite data link and direction finder.
Information from the sensors will be accessible from the operator console It is displayed in real time and is tightly integrated with a tactical map. The map will contain the cur-rent aircraft position and time marks on the flight track. The map image has a large number of operator selectable over-lays such as background information (territorial borders, economic zone borders, protected areas etc.), geocorrected overlays from SLAR, IR/UV, AIS information, observation and target notes, notes on location of captured images from cameras. All information from the mission is saved and can be compiled in mission reports and/or sent on to ground station and other units.
