Route to Reducing Aerospace Manufacturing Costs by More than EUR 450,000 to Be Demonstrated at Paris Air Show
Sandvik Coromant to demonstrate costs savings examples introduced in the manufacturing and processes of several aerospace companies
Paris, France, April 25, 2007 --[ASDWire]-- Like all manufacturers, aircraft component manufacturers want increased throughput and greater profitability delivered through shorter cycle times and quicker tool changes. Sandvik Coromant has experience in helping manufacturers achieve these goals through a range of processes, methodologies and tooling solutions; just recently, for example, the company helped reduce milling time on one alloy steel hydraulic body by 63 percent for a major aerospace manufacturer.
This success led to a formal Productivity Improvement Program that identified some
€ 50,000 in potential annual savings, ultimately resulting in a € 450,000 payoff by introducing a quick-change modular tooling system. Cycle time on one of the larger fittings was nearly 20 minutes on machines using end mills with conventional carbide inserts. The Sandvik solution with CoroMill 390 milling cutter with grade GC1025 carbide inserts reduced this to 7.5 minutes. Machine speeds and feeds using the original end mill and inserts were 2,300 rpm and 200 mm/min, and Sandvik Coromant’s CoroMill 390 enabled operators to run the same parts at 5,000 rpm and 1500 mm/min. Such gains in productivity make the difference between posting a profit and operating at a loss.
Aerospace components produced with Sandvik Coromant tools, including a Rolls-Royce engine and SNECMA pieces, will be showcased at the Paris Air Show from June 18 to 24, in Hall 3, Booth E3. This will be a unique opportunity to take a fresh look at the stunning results the latest tooling technology can deliver for today’s demanding aerospace manufacturer.
