Aptima Awarded Six 'Innovative Technology Transfer' Contracts by Department of Defense

Partnerships with universities will focus on developing leading-edge technologies

Woburn, Mass. - August 18, 2008 --[ASDWire]-- Aptima, Inc., a leader in human-centered engineering, today announced that it has been awarded six Small Business Innovative Research Technology Transfer (STTR) awards from the Department of Defense. The Phase I contracts, totaling in excess of $550,000, will explore the feasibility of cutting-edge ideas and technologies which will enhance the performance of America’s warfighters.

Overseen by the US Small Business Administration, the STTR program partners small businesses with university-based research institutions, combining the strengths of entrepreneurial innovation with the support and resources of theoretical research. Aptima will be joint-venturing with Brown University, George Mason University, the University of Iowa Operator Performance Laboratory, the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Center for Afghanistan Studies, and Wright State University to develop technologies that will be applied towards commercial application in later phases.

The six contracts fall within the following three broad categories:

* Cognitive computing architectures that mimic the human brain
* Advanced visualization systems that enable understanding at-a-glance
* Training the new skills required for today’s military missions

“Getting technology into the hands of the warfighters in the field is our number one priority,” said Aptima Executive Vice President, Michael Paley. “The research emerging from these partnerships with academia will position Aptima to more quickly and more efficiently deliver mission critical technology to the Department of Defense.”
