Bohemia Interactive selected to develop 'VBS NATO', a custom version of VBS2 designed for the tactical training needs of NATO member countries
Due for delivery in mid-2009, VBS NATO will provide the first NATO-wide game-based tactical training capability, allowing distributed forces to interoperate within the powerful VBS2 virtual environment. The implementation will see NATO Allied Commander Transformation (ACT) host a number of dedicated VBS NATO servers that member countries (issued with VBS NATO client licenses) can connect to in order to conduct collective training in a wide range of customizable scenarios.
Peter Morrison, CEO of Bohemia Interactive Simulations (BISim), stated “The vision of Bohemia Interactive is to provide the first truly multi-national Virtual Battlespace for coalition forces, and VBS NATO is certainly a big step towards this goal. Before long, I am convinced that entire mission rehearsal exercises will be conducted entirely in game-based virtual simulation, prior to deployment”.
One of the key functions of VBS NATO is to provide high-quality counter improvised explosive device (CIED) training, which is currently a strong focus of Bohemia Interactive’s development team. Bohemia Interactive has been working closely with US-based Cognitive Training Solutions (CTS, jphillips@cogtraining.com) to refine the ability of VBS2 to provide highly realistic IED-related decisionmaking requirements, in order to aid coalition forces training for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. These new IED features will be included in VBS NATO and also the Military User Group VBS2 distribution.
