Luciad demonstrates high performance data fusion for C2 to the UK MoD

Luciad provides Shared Situational Awareness in CGTS 2012 Olympics security threat demo

Leuven, Belgium, June 7 2010 --[ASDWire]-- Luciad, the leading provider of high performance visualization software for situational awareness applications in Defense & Security, demonstrated its technology during a recent geospatial capability demonstration in the framework of CGTS (Common Geospatial Tool Set), a research project driven by the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD).

The CGTS project analyzes how the GIS needs of the UK MoD can best be met by using standardized geospatial Web services and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) functionality. The goal of this project is to enable war fighters to find, create, exploit, view and share geospatially referenced information, consistently and securely on platforms and applications across all defense communications infrastructures and on stand-alone devices. This enhanced information coherence and interoperability will eventually lead to increased shared situational awareness and an improved decision making process, both at national and coalition level.

The recent CGTS demonstration gathered several providers of geo-data, geo-software and C2 solutions, including Luciad. The providers were tasked to demonstrate interoperability between their different systems through the use of Web services. The demonstration was built on a realistic Homeland Security scenario of a terrorist attack threat during the London Olympics in 2012.

Luciad demonstrated its high performance capabilities to fuse massive data streams into one combined situational awareness picture in a C4ISR networked environment. The LuciadMap-based client fused and displayed data supplied by other vendors into a single, map-centric image in both 2D and 3D. Luciad also demonstrated its AIXM 5 capability, allowing for the dispatch of a digital Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and for the automatic evacuation of airspace in case of a security incident.

“If the UK MOD is to meet all the requirements desired by the user community then it is clear a multi-vendor solution is required”, said Andrew Fleming, Geospatial Research Manager with SEIG, and overseeing the CGTS project. “Many of the attendees were impressed with the flexibility and performance of the capability demonstrated and Luciad’s contribution played a major part in the event’s success.”

“Based on its success, we will now present the results of the CGTS demonstration to the UK MoD and, in a later stage, to the stakeholder community at large”, added John Tate, Geo-expert at Lockheed Martin Systems UK, which is leading the industry consortium behind the CGTS project.

“This event offered an excellent opportunity for Luciad to demonstrate its mission-critical solutions for real-time operational C2 systems”, says Lode Missiaen, CEO of Luciad. “Luciad’s technology is fully in sync with the high end requirements of the CGTS project. Our technology is already used by the UK military forces, by the US Armed Forces, and is used in theatre in NATO operations. This successful demonstration confirmed LuciadMap as the high performance visualization solution of choice for building modern and flexible C4ISR systems.”

The CGTS research project is sponsored by DSTL and DE&S (UK Government). The Team Sparta consortium carrying out the research is led by prime system integrator Lockheed Martin UK (IS&S).

About Luciad
Luciad provides software solutions for high performance visualization of geospatial information. Luciad’s software components are the building blocks for mission-critical Command and Control systems.

Luciad’s core software suite is LuciadMap™, a software solution that system integrators and original equipment manufacturers can easily integrate into their systems. LuciadMap provides the framework and functionalities for achieving high situational awareness by very effectively handling large numbers of static and moving data on top of geographical information. This can include maps, satellite imagery, and terrain elevation in many different formats and references

LuciadEarth Enterprise™ is a server software solution based on the same solid foundation as LuciadMap. The product is designed to manage, fuse, and serve massive amounts of static and dynamic data in network-centric environments.

Dedicated to providing its clients with the best possible service, Luciad Professional Services will assess advanced system requirements and assist system integrators with the implementation of fully integrated solutions.

Luciad’s international customer base includes prestigious customers active in the Defense and Security industry such as Boeing, DCNS, DGA, DRDC, DSTA, EADS, Frequentis, Harris, Havelsan, IABG, Lockheed Martin, NATO, Patria, Saab, SAGEM, SAIC, Terma, Thales and Thales Raytheon Systems.
